By Heather Price
A vision board team building activity will harness the power of conscious co-creation in your workplace. We offer vision board workshops for team building either onsite at your office or online via live video throughout South-East Asia.
It makes sense that in order to manifest our team’s dreams and visions, we need to see or imagine and be reminded of them often, especially amid uncertainty.
There is no doubt that visioning and planning, be it personal or at your workplace, is essential to success. It gives us a sense of being able to influence how the future could be, consciously co-creating our way to our desired outcomes. In fact, it has been a common practice for organisations to have a team vision and mission statement that guides all major decisions and offers a perimeter to focus and work within.
Vision board activities have become very popular for business, team and life planning, and to assist teams to explore and grow their personal, team, and company relationships and visions. Several studies suggest that humans have a remarkable ability to process and remember images. The use of vision boards taps into this ability, maximising a team’s visioning capacity and their ability to achieve their goals.
Interestingly, vision boards have also been shown to promote team bonding and commitment. The exercises involved, and indeed the whole approach to creative visioning, are designed to inspire team members to not only take their own journey in creative vision boarding but also to assist and support fellow team members in the process.
Traditionally, vision board workshops are done with all participants in the same room, however, technology now offers creative processes to make online vision board workshops just as engaging and effective.
There is no specific time to create vision boards, nor one reason
- They may be created early in the year, or financial year, and used as a guide for the year ahead.
- They may be used as a ‘pick me up’ activity and to give you some fresh ideas when you have lost your way.
- They may be created to support a special project, quest, or request, at any time.
- They may be created to support a major team decision and help carve a smooth path ahead.
- They could be used as a team-building exercise to support a joint vision.
- You might like to create a vision board of this kind once or twice a year, or once every couple of years.
- They may be used after a coaching/counselling/mentoring/planning/consulting session with a client as a visual summary of what was discussed and discovered, or to map out quests and goals for the path ahead.
Measurement of where the team is now, and planning where you would like to be
The creation of vision boards, with preparation exercises and time put aside for review post creation, can be used as a significant tool for team building, and to measure where you are at now in all major areas of your life, work or business and to see where you would like to be. The process then invites you to transfer the information gleaned into aspirations you have chosen for these areas, completing the co-creation process with clear commitment action steps.
The methodology can vary
The tools and methods used to create vision boards are vast and varied. One can take a light-hearted approach to simply create an enjoyable platform to explore and bring to life the quests identified for the time ahead. Or, with preparation, measurement and clear guidelines of enquiry, the visioning/co-creation process can go deep to fully explore all aspects of the Whole Self.
The latter process involves drawing out one’s dreaming in visual form and placing images thoughtfully to create an ordered map and blueprint that can be clearly navigated over the weeks and months ahead. This map makes it very easy for you to navigate your way around your board as time passes and your dreams and visions begin to manifest.
Images, words, and symbols
These are a major part of creative visioning and help to broaden your perspective, offering surprising clues and guidance as to how to view your situation and your future visions. They urge you on as you take the time to reflect on your board. Some previously vague images, words, and symbols may make a whole lot more sense as time moves on. The discovery and reflective process can be great fun!
Clarifying long and short-term team visions, goals, steps, blocks, and actions
Creating vision boards is one thing, however, the co-creation process invites you to go beyond enquiry and visualising your dreams; it invites you to be a conscious and creative participant in how your life, or yout team’s progress, unfolds. There is space dedicated in your self-enquiry exercises to explore, attempt to understand and creatively challenge, even potentially transform, any blocks in the way of manifesting your dreams or your team’s goals. There is room to decide on the actions you will need to take to ensure what you imagine becomes possible. Planning and creating steps to assist your dreams, or your team’s goals to manifest is one of the most important steps in becoming a fully actualised individual. It reflects your commitment to actively participate in the co-creation process. By committing to and taking action, you are demonstrating your belief in the process.
Focused team visioning
Once created, you will have a visual map of your team’s way forward that you can refer to every day. Your thoughts are now focused and clear, with goals to support you to be in the best possible position to co-create your dreams and visions.
The outcomes you can anticipate include:
- You will develop a broader perspective of who you are within a map of wisdom.
- You will have a greater realisation of what it is that you really want for yourself and within a team.
- You will discover what may be resisting your path as a powerful Co-Creator, bringing this to light in order to transform into new energy and new ways to move forward.
- You will enjoy a creative and exciting experience of putting your dreams and visions into visual form, with a clear focus.
- You will have clear steps to take over time.
- You will develop a greater sense of being a partner in life’s unfolding.
